The Zelkova (Chinese Elm) is a very hardy plant that loses some leaves continuously but regrows easily. The photo is representative of a small batch of bonsai; the delivered specimen may vary slightly. This bonsai tree comes with a pot and saucer, and we also include extensive care instructions. This species is the most common bonsai from southern China. It can be found growing wild throughout China. In colder regions, it is deciduous, and in warmer regions, it is evergreen. This means that this species could also be grown as a deciduous tree outdoors in Europe. The elm has very small leaves and beautiful bark that peels beautifully as it ages. The elm sheds leaves relatively easily, but even if it has fallen bare, for example, it quickly regenerates. Trees from (sub)tropical regions are accustomed to a more or less constant annual temperature. Unlike trees native to our climate, they don't require a dormant period with a drop in temperature and leaf shedding. This makes these species perfectly suited for indoor cultivation. In the summer, when temperatures exceed 15 degrees Celsius, they can also thrive outdoors, for example on a patio. Generally, they will thrive outdoors due to the improved climate (humidity, light, and fresh air). This tree species can be kept both indoors and outdoors. If you place the Zelkova (Chinese Elm) outdoors, it will shed its leaves in winter after displaying beautiful autumn colors. In spring, the tree will sprout new, fresh leaves. If you place it indoors, it will retain its leaves.
