The larch is a popular bonsai species, particularly because it quickly develops thick trunks. The changing color of its needles throughout the seasons is also very popular; the larch is one of the few conifers that loses its needles in winter. The two most common species are the Larix decidua (European larch) and the Larix leptolepis (Chinese larch).
