The Zanthoxylum piperetum belongs to the pink pepper family and is an aromatic plant. In the wild, it produces pink pepper berries. Indoors, the small green flowers will not be pollinated. The compound leaves are beautifully glossy, small, and fairly firm—but not edible. A true sun worshipper!
This bonsai was cultivated in southern China. Trees from (sub)tropical regions are accustomed to more or less constant annual temperatures. Unlike trees from our climate, they don't require a dormant period with a drop in temperature and leaf shedding. This makes these species perfectly suited for indoor cultivation. In the summer, when temperatures exceed 15 degrees Celsius, they can also thrive outdoors, for example on a patio. Generally, they will thrive outdoors in the summer due to the better climatic conditions (humidity, light, and fresh air).
