The Metasequoia glyptostroboides is the only living species of the Metasequoia genus. This tree belongs to the Taxodiaceae family, one of the families of cone-bearing trees classified as Gymnosperms. This family also includes other remarkable trees, such as species of the Sequoia genus (the redwoods of California and Oregon), Sequoiadendron (the giant sequoia), and Taxodium (the bald cypress). Species in the Taxodiaceae family are monoecious. This means that the male and female reproductive organs are located on different trees. Furthermore, unlike those of pines and spruces, their pollen grains do not have wings with air bladders. Trees in the Metasequoia genus were initially known only as fossils. Initially, these 60-million-year-old fossils were considered to belong to the Sequoia genus. In 1941, a Japanese researcher named one of the fossils Metasequoia, because it differed from the others. During World War II, a Chinese forester accidentally found three trees in a remote region of southern China that appeared to be losing their leaves. It eventually became clear in 1944 that this tree had not yet been described. In 1945, an expedition was organized to this region, and it turned out that many more trees of this species existed. By 1948, people were convinced that the discovered trees belonged to the previously described genus Metasequoia, of which, until then, only fossils were known.
