Origin: Japan
The Acer buergerianum, or Trident Maple, is a tree species frequently used as bonsai. It is frequently imported into Europe from Japan and Korea. It is a vigorous grower, easy to cultivate, naturally has relatively small leaves, and also changes color beautifully in autumn. Some Acer buergerianums turn reddish-orange in autumn, while others turn buttery yellow. The Japanese variety has pale bark and light green leaves, while the Korean variety has darker bark and darker green leaves. The tree lends itself well to wiring; however, care must be taken to ensure that the wire doesn't penetrate the bark too much due to its vigorous growth.
