The azalea occupies a special place in bonsai cultivation. It shares with a number of other plants used for bonsai the fact that it is not a tree but a shrub, and moreover, one that is primarily cultivated for its flowers. Anyone who has spent time in the Alps or Dolomites in spring may have seen azaleas blooming in the wild, and it's a truly remarkable experience. In Japan, this plant is much more common in the wild. We mustn't forget that Japan is primarily a mountainous country, but also an archipelago with many locations offering ideal conditions for this magnificent shrub.
